Title
GEOREFERENCING ARCHIVES WITH LINKED OPEN GEODATA
Abstract
Using text-mining toolkit to extract geographic references from text, research resources are connected to the semantic web with geographic links. This talk discusses several archive-mining and georeferencing projects done with the Edinburgh Geoparser and the Unlock Places gazetteer search service, approaches to turning named entities into linked entities. We've worked with historic population reports, parliamentary proceedings and census microdata, using geographic links to provide spatial cross-search of resources.
The Edinburgh Geoparser is a toolkit developed at the Language Technology Group at the School of Informatics in Edinburgh. It's made available as a web service, Unlock Text, by the EDINA data centre. EDINA's Unlock Places service provides a cross-search of different open geodata sources including geonames.org and Ordnance Survey open data. We're working on open-sourcing the toolkit, there should be something available by FOSS4G.
