Title

POSTGIS WKT RASTER. AN OPEN SOURCE ALTERNATIVE TO ORACLE GEORASTER

Abstract

PostGIS WKT Raster is a project aimed at adding complete raster support to PostGIS, the PostgreSQL spatial extension. Another solution for storing raster in database is Oracle Spatial GeoRaster. This is a powerful tool, but it is subject to Oracle Tecnhnology Network Developer License Terms. Access to a production version requires that users hold an Oracle License that many potential users of this feature can not afford.

The aim of this paper is to compare the capabilites of Oracle Spatial GeoRaster 11g (the last version) and the existing and potential capabilities of PostGIS WKT Raster, now under development. We will argue that PostGIS WKT Raster can become a solid open-source alternative to Oracle Spatial GeoRaster for applications that need to store or analyse raster data. WKT Raster will provide capabilities such as seamless vector-raster analysis toolkit and lossless raster/vector conversion.
