PERFORMANCE AND STATISTICAL ANALYSIS OF WMS SERVERS

Abstract

The test procedures used by the FOSS4G "WMS Performance shootout" provide a standardized way for measuring and comparing the performance of WMS server installations.

This talk explains the installation of the test data sets and execution of the JMeter test procedures for measuring and optimizing WMS setups. Hints for perfomance improvements are given, with a focus on PostGIS and UMN Mapserver.

Based on the statistical analysis of more than 4000 WMS servers listed on geopole.org, many aspects of public servers are available. Besides performance numbers, some other interesting comparisons can be made:
* WMS server product statistics
* WMS standard versions
* OGC standard conformance
