Title

IMPLEMENTATION OF ISO AND OGC (INSPIRE) METADATA STANDARDS – MEDARD (FOSS) METADATA EDITOR AND INTERNET GEOINFORMATION METADATA PLATFORM (IPMGEO)

Abstract

MEDARD (MEtadata StanDARD Editor) is an application, which implements all geoinformation standards (ISO, OGC) required by EU INSPIRE Directive (and accompanying technical specifications). Additionally application supports metadata inheritance and hierarchisation and provides set of tools for editing geoinformation metadata. Editor can work entirely on a local machine or it can use remote repository (client-server). Application is designed to support implementation of INSPIRE Directive and establishing European Spatial Information Infrastructure.

MEDARD editor implements GML application profile (for the first time) for geoscientific data description – GeoSciML, in the form of standardized stratygraphic table designed to handle geological time descriptions in geological data profile.

MEDARD metadata editor is an integral part of Internet Geoinformation Metadata Platform (IPMGeo), through which it cooperates with map server providing WMS and WFS services and with AQUARIUS metadata catalogue. This approach enables both viewing spatial metadata sets and linking them directly to metadata documents. Validation of metadata documents against XSD definition with simplified recovery from errors as well as support for publishing metadata documents in XML format directly into metadata catalogue repository were also implemented. Metadata catalogue also forms an integral part of the Platform.

MEDARD metadata editor is published as Free and Open Source Software on Affero GPL (AGPL) version 3.0 license.

The presentation will provide information on metadata editor as well as the problems encountered and solved during development of an application distributed as FOSS. It will also present the idea of creating multicomponent solution for creation and publication of geoinformation metadata - Internet Geoinformation Metadata Platform. IPMGeo Platform integrates metadata editor (MEDARD), metadata catalogue (AQUARIUS) and map server (WMS, WFS services) and can form an integral part of spatial information nodes infrastructure compliant with INSPIRE Directive.
