Title

MIRAMON MAP BROWSER DIFFERENTIAL CHARACTERISTICS AND FUNCTIONALITIES AND THE EXPERIENCE RELEASING IT IN THE “FARGA.CAT”

Abstract

MiraMon Map Browser is a web map tool implemented in JavaScript and HTML that follows WMS, WMTS, WFS and WCS OGC service standards adding our own ideas under the form of new requests and functionalities. WCS and WFS can be considered download services, but they have some limitations. Indeed, WCS is only useful for coverages (raster) while WFS is useful for any feature (vector) served in GML, a powerful and efficient standard but often difficult to be automatically parsed by clients. Consequently, a developer needs to implement both services to offer raster and vector downloading. The inclusion of MMZ download operation solves it by allowing the download of several coverage and feature types, with metadata and databases, in a single compressed file. Other functionalities are typical queries (that allow locating a specific object within the navigation area through selecting one or more attribute values) and the ability to show animations of time series for visual analysis. Also, multiple areas in several projection systems can be chosen in the same browser, a very useful option when the area is dispersed (Alaska, Hawaii, etc in the USA case, for example).

The “Farga.cat” project is a web space that concentrates the reflection, the debate and the development efforts of the free software in Catalan (it is the Catalan equivalent of the SourceForge). MiraMon Map Browser user interface is multilingual but its code is fully developed and documented in Catalan language. Since 2008, it has been hosted in the Farga.cat as an open source project. The paper will discuss this experience, showing what happened in this open source initiative under a modest scope.
