Title
UTILIZATION OF OPEN SOURCE PROJECTS IN A EU BORDER SURVEILLANCE SYSTEM PROJECT
Abstract
The main objective of the TALOS(Transportable Autonomous patrol for Land bOrder Surveillance system) project is to develop and field test the innovative concept of a mobile, modular, scalable, autonomous and adaptive system for protecting European borders. The TALOS project is multidisciplinary and responds to the FP7 Theme Security with respect to “Intelligent surveillance and border security (technologies, equipment, tools and methods for protecting Europe's border controls such as land and coastal borders)”.
In this project we chose open source GIS tools to track the unmanned units of border surveillance system like unmanned ground vehicles(UGV) and unmanned air vehicles(UAV). On top of GIS tools , a mission planning component is being developed. The desktop will have 3D visualization in the final phase which will include NASA WorldWind library.
The project aims to utilize the open source software, uDIG ,Geoserver, PostGIS, NASA WorldWind to fulfill the GIS Desktop and raster/vector data serving purposes.
The presentation will try to present main aspects of the project, the difficulties encountered during development, solutions developed to these problems, approaches taken for handling project specific architectural challenges and general experience with the tools.
