Title

A CASE STUDY IMPLEMENTING A MULTIDISCIPLINARY ECOLOGICAL/BIODIVERSITY WEB PORTAL: THE OSGEO STACK

Abstract

Surveys off the northeast coast of New Zealand collected several datasets using a wide range of methods including multibeam, sidescan, aerial photography, diving, underwater still & video camera, dredge, sediment traps, CTD and beam trawl. These data are made publicly available using FOSS tools, using Postgis, Mapserver, OpenLayers, Tilecache, Geonetwork and the Silverstripe CMS. Reports and datasets are catalogued and made available using Geonetwork, and a custom map management tool was developed as a module in the CMS to provide a web map tool based around OpenLayers. A new web based GUI to simplify data entry & searching using the Geonetwork back end was also implemented. All the additional tools developed for this portal are Open Source, and the system provides a success story for Open Standards and Open Source.
