Title

ADVANCED GEOSPATIAL DATA VALIDATION VIA WEB PROCESSING SERVICE FOR THE NON-EXPERT USERĀ

Abstract

There is an increasing demand for advanced data validation due to the growing amount of geospatial information derived from various sources at different scales and stakeholder levels, e.g. environmental agencies, city and urban planning departments, agricultural consultants.

Since the release of the OGC Web Processing Service the above mentioned users are enabled to access geospatial analysis services on raster and vector data via HTTP and SOAP requests. Currently, it is common practice to move complex geo-computational services into the ‘cloud’ to enable the usage of high performance computing facilities. Each user who is able to send a GetCapabilities request including data sets can also retrieve results for further data analysis. However, it is not foreseen in WPS yet to provide built-in validation of the results. Typically, it is assumed that the target user is experienced enough to judge the requested results of the geospatial analysis. Nevertheless, this can lead to propagation of errors and misinterpretation of the resulting data.

This talk will address the development of a general concept for advanced automated data validation based on a Web Processing Service. The data validation would consist of specific geospatial algorithms e.g. checking data sets for geometry or potential usability in certain fields, such as hydrological consistency of digital elevation models and cross validation of interpolation parameters.
