Title

INTERACTIVE METEOSAT: EDUCATIONAL PLATFORM FOR METEOROLOGICAL APPLICATIONS ENTIRELY DEVELOPED WITH FLOSS SOFTWARE

Abstract

Interactive METEOSAT (IM) is part of the EDUSPACE program, supported by the European Space Agency (ESA), aiming to provide secondary school students and teachers a learning and teaching tool for meteorological applications of Remote Sensing data (in particular, METEOSAT images). Through a simple and intuitive web interface, IM offers users functionalities such as: zooming, panning, introducing quantitative geotagged data (current conditions, wind direction, wind speed, cloud cover, elevation and temperature), uploading photographs and text describing the weather. Using appropriate symbols, the observations can be displayed, queried and analyzed on daily METEOSAT weather satellite images, synoptic weather maps and with other observations submitted throughout Europe, thereby enabling a more detailed interpretation of the satellite images. The system is build entirely with standard compliant free and open source software applications like OpenLayers, GeoServer and GDAL.
