Title

SEMANTIC SEARCH IN OGC CATALOG SERVICES FOR THE WEB

Abstract

We will highlight an approach to enrich Discovery in OGC-CSW using W3C OWL (Web Ontology Language) thesaurus documents. A thesaurus can provide a meaningful structure to a model of the world (or some part thereof) that does not exist in pure free text based searches. The approach is based on Juliet Gwenzi's Master thesis at the Univeristy of Twente, the Netherlands. We will discuss how the CSW/ebRIM specification offers a natural integration point for such semantic structures into both CSW search operations and into Graphical User Interfaces that allow for traversing and browsing the thesaurus. We will demonstrate a proof-of-concept implementation in GeoNetwork opensource that shows both semantically enhanced CSW GetRecords searches and a user-friendly GUI for exploring a thesaurus and retrieving matching data.
