EDUGEO MINI-SIG : A SIMPLIFIED GIS DESKTOP APPLICATION WITH QGIS FOR EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES

Abstract

Camptocamp has been mandated by IGN to develop a GIS desktop application - the “EDUGEO mini-SIG” - based on open source geographic information system QGIS. The EDUGEO mini-SIG, which is part of the EDUGEO IGN project (www.edugeo.fr), will be used in French high school educational programs. Students will be provided with a GIS introduction based on the use of this simplified desktop application.

Some functionalities were directly implemented in QGIS trunk. For example, in order to access data on IGN Geo-portal (http://www.geoportail.fr/), QGIS trunk has been enhanced with a WMS-C client.

For specific demands, the use of plugin demonstrated the high flexibility of the QGIS API. QGIS interface was deeply simplified and modified to provide an application designed for beginner users. Another example of enhancement with a plugin is a GeoDRM proxy needed for accessing geoportail WMS-C.

The presentation will present the final application and focus on the technical approach used for WMS-C handling and GeoDRM.
