Title

THE HIGH PERFORMANCE MAPPING COMPONENT OF THE SWISS FEDERAL GEODATA PORTAL BASED ON THE MAPFISH DEVELOPMENT FRAMEWORK

Abstract

The map viewer http://map.geo.admin.ch is the central component of the federal geodata portal of the Swiss government. It grants access to over 50 data sets for federal agencies as well as the broad public. As such, it requires on the one hand a scalable and state of the art visualization of the content of the SDI. On the other hand, data dissemination and reusability is achieved through an OpenLayer and ExtJS based API. This allows embedding of dynamic map content into third party websites, including additional information such as metadata, geoservices and distribution channels.

High availability at high usage and fast connection to the data for OGC services is achieved through a newly established combination of the MapFish framework with an innovative CloudComputing architecture. As a result, cost/ benefit ratio reached a new dimension for governmental mapping solutions. Innovation as well is the massive use of cache and usage of permalinks, which allows the extended search capabilities and the definition of a modular and ergonomic user interface. This leverages the Swiss federal geodata portal as a reference application for the MapFish development framework, which is currently in the incubation phase for OSGeo.
