Title

THE SPATIAL DATA CATALOG FOR MOBILE USERS USING FREE AND OPENSOURCE SOFTWARE

Abstract

The web-based spatial data catalog has been developed by Bakosurtanal to provide access for listing and displaying available spatial data. The increasing number of web access through mobile device has inspired to build the catalog application for mobile platform. This paper is aimed to explain the development of a mobile spatial catalog. The system is built using free and opensource software for database, map server, and web server. The design considers various aspects such as the slow mobile network, the processing speed of mobile device and various screen size. Several methods to convert a full web system to mobile web are studied. The available approaches are by modifying the stylesheet and building a duplicate system designed specifically for mobile access. This study indicares that the later approach is more appropriate, because the developer can create a specific user interface suited for mobile communication. The web GIS for browsing the maps is also designed by considering the display size limitation of mobile device. The resulted mobile site allows users to search spatial data by location and theme, view the metadata and show the display and browse the map.
