Title

WMS INSPECTOR: A FIREFOX ADD-ON WITH TOOLS FOR WORKING WITH WEB MAP SERVICES

Abstract

WMS Inspector is a Firefox add-on that provides a set of tools for working with the Web Map Service (WMS) standard. It has a double objective: to become a useful tool for developers that frequently work with WMS and to offer a friendly approach to WMS to users without a technical background.

As a Firefox add-on, it provides an integrated environment in the most commonly used browser for developing on-line geospatial applications, among other extensions like Firebug. WMS Inspector is registered in the official Mozilla Add-ons repository [1], which makes extremely easy for users to download, install and upgrade it.

Its main features include:

These features allow easing repetitive tasks like debugging requests or checking which individual services are used in an on-line mapping application. It can be specially useful when working with mapping libraries like OpenLayers or MapBender or setting up WMS services with servers like MapServer or GeoServer.

Planned developments include a favorites management system, an embedded map viewer, user defined actions or reports and the integration with other geospatial tools. All users are welcome to discuss which of these or other features should be included in future versions.

WMS Inspector is an Open Source project, released under the GNU General Public License version 3 (GPLv3) . The source code can be downloaded from the public repository [2], which also hosts a wiki with all the project documentation  and support options [3].
